Memories from John L Bazalgette:

Great Uncles Fred and Reg were brothers of my grandmother, Isabelle Eliza Turner ‎(known as Gipsy for some reason - anyone less gipsy-like could not be imagined)‎. Uncle Fred’s wife was very ill and we were never allowed to see her. He was a ‘peppery’ old cavalry colonel, previously in the Deccan Horse. He hated the Atlee government with a bitterness that characterised today’s politics. Uncle Reg was an army doctor - also a Colonel - who was awarded the DSO in the Boxer rebellion in China. Granny always said that had he been a fighting soldier he would have been awarded the VC. I don’t know the details. I remember his wife Jeannie as bats, always taking us into a grotto at the end of her garden which was decorated with bits of broken pottery.

Uncle Fred’s son Walter was a LtCol in the Royal Engineers. His wife Joan was a descendant of General Wolfe of the storming of the Abraham Heights in driving the French out of Canada. Walter was a bit of a ‘naughty boy’: when he turned up at our house with his mistress, Pop threw him out! His son Robin was a very sad case. Seriously depressed and I suspect he committed suicide.

We have several bits of Chinese cloisonné which Uncle Reg gave my father, some of it very beautiful, though one vase is badly damaged.
