General Notes: EXTRACTS FROM 'A MIST IN MOONLIGHT'

Robert, known as Bob, whom I remember, inherited Dereen, and went to the First World War with my father ....

....Bob married a Mrs. Houchin ‎[nee Warren - PJF]‎ , whose first husband had been Principal of the School of Art in Cork. They had no children. Bob, like his father but not to the same disastrous extent, was partial to a drop. He used to go to the local in Coachford, where he took his few drinks every night before ambling home. He always kept a horse, and was known to win the odd point~to~point, so the state of his stable was a matter of some interest to the local sportsmen.

One particular year, he had a really magnificent looking animal in training, when he suddenly up and sold him. He normally sat in the corner of the pub, quietly drinking his drop and minding his own business. The regular customers, impelled by disappointment and curiosity, finally sent a deputation to enquire as to his reasons for selling the horse.

Bob, who had a slight impediment, paused and considered. 'W~Well', he said, 'It's like this, He w~was g~galloping like the b~bloody Divil, but he was s~staying in the same damn place all the t~time'.

Bob didn't go in much for socialising, but his wife loved to entertain. When these festivities occurred, Bob would slip away quietly to Coachford. I have been told by a person who attended one of these occasions as a boy, that one night, when the guests were staying over, a crisis of accommodation arose. This was solved by Mrs. FitzGibbon doubling up with a lady friend in the guest room, while the boy was nominated as Bob's bed~fellow. ‎(My informant neglected to tell me whether he was the boy in question.)‎ Bob strolled home at his usual time, and rolled into bed in the dark. A few hours later, still in the dark, he woke up and groped instinctively for his connubial rights.. The resulting uproar was worthy of the best tradition of French Farce.

The midde name "Cowcher" would appear to originate from a marriage in England between his great aunt Mary Denew and a Robert Cowcher on 5 Sep 1838 ‎(source: Faculty Office Marriage Licence allegations 1442-1850)‎.
